More Christmas at Grammies

Christmas at Grammies 2008

Christmas at the Wallaces 2008

Christmas morning was so much fun at the Wallace Household. Santa had created a treasure hunt for a family gift. The treasure hunt required help from all family members. Abby had to use her Harry Potter knowledge and a "cipher" like in National Treasure. One clue was in Owen's room. The final clue required knowledge of the Periodic Table. The end of the treasure hunt led the family to the attic to find a Wii. Everyone was thrilled to see such an awesome family gift. Thank you Santa for making a great family tradition!

My Challenge - as written by Abby

Here is the essay that my 5th grader wrote regarding her challenge....

Have you ever had a challenge you wanted to face? I am facing my challenge right now. My challenge is soccer. My brother started playing this year ad I wanted to play to. My mom signed me up. Then, one day we went to a store called Dicks Sporting Goods to buy cleats, socks, shin guards and a soccer ball. I was ready to play!

Finally, the first practice day showed up. I was very, very nervous. I was anxious to see if any of my friends were on my team. I could not believe my ears when the coach said we had to sprit all the way around the high school. That didn't exactly make the team very blissful. Then after we finished, I was extremely pleased when we got to go get an icy gulp of water.

Next, we had to split up into teams and play a practice game. T he coach advised me of the positions. Let me tell you, there are a lot of positions in the game! It was hard for me to comprehend every position, but I finally caught on. Then, later that week, my first game day came up. I was extremely panicky. Then to make things inferior, I was playing the first quarter. That made me even more frightened! But after I played, I was in good health. No broken bones or anything! I couldn't wait to be in the third quarter After the game was over, I realized that we lost. Well, it was our first game and we barely knew each other. I was still determined to play and win the next game. So if you want to do something very badly, always work hard at it and make sure that you really want it. But also, make sure you will have fun!

Parent Teacher Conferences...

Today was the dreaded work day for teachers in our area, parent teacher conferences. Now I say dreaded work day not because teacher's don't like talking to parents, but because it is a VERY LONG DAY for the teachers. Try teaching a half a day, then working from 12-8 pm. It wears you out. I had good conferences overall. You always have that one weird parent, the gushy parent, the talks too much parent, the what can I do parent...but all of mine were pretty much normal this year. YEAH! I've been doing PT conferences for 12 years now so I've seen a lot of parents in my day.

The exciting part of today was meeting with Abby and Owen's teacher. Owen's conference was first. I was little excited to hear what his kindergarten teacher would say about him. I am proud to report that his reading is on and above grade level. His math concepts are above grade level. He focuses well on school work, understands directions, works well on projects, and takes time to complete his work. YEAH OWIE!!! His issues are that sometimes he works ahead when told to wait - when asked about it, he says I get bored waiting for everyone else. Here is the biggie that I am a little concerned with.....he sometimes wants to challenge authority, but otherwise follows directions. His teacher says its normal for his age group but he does ask that WHY question a lot. I'm aware - trust me! All in all...he is doing GREAT in school and we know he is socially where he should be. He has many friends and seems to get along well with his buddies.

Abby's conference went well too. She has a teacher that is only in her 2nd year of teaching, but has been a mother for 20 years and a teacher's aid for many. I think teachers who are mothers seem to be more understanding to kids- at least this is my experience. Abby got straight A's this grading period. She is the first student for her teacher to get all A's in a nine weeks. Abby is going on her "A" wall. Abby's picture will be the first on the wall. YEAH Abby!! The only problem I have with Abby's report card is that her lowest grade is in SCIENCE. She has an A- in Science, but hey it's still an A! While waiting for the teacher, we got to read some stories that the kids in the class wrote. The topic was Challenges. I read the first story, it was pretty good. The second story was Abby's. Wow!! I was impressed that my daughter wrote such an amazing story. I am going to post it on here once it comes home. I couldn't believe her sentence structure, use of the introductory paragraph, and the vocabulary!!! Wow, that girl can WRITE!!! Her teacher thinks she will get a perfect score on writing on the ISTEP. I hope so!! Guess what Abby's major issue is? neatness and organization...oh things never change.....

Cousins.....

This is the cutest picture ever! At gammas this summer, Owen was walking around shirtless. Miles decided he wanted to be like "Owa" and be shirtless too. Miles wanting to be like "Owa" made Owen's day. I suggested a picture together and they both loved the idea.

First Day of School

Everyone in the Wallace household was certainly ready for school to start this year. Usually by the end of summer, all of us crave that routine that work and school put us in. In addition, the tragedy that my family has suffered through this summer made us want to get out of the summer routine and get to school. Starting school this year is a little bittersweet. Owen is starting Kindergarten which has both good and bad qualities related to it. He is growing up too fast, my baby that is, but I'm ready for the big kid stuff (no more diaper bags, etc for us). Abby started 5th grade - wow can you believe it, 5th grade. I can remember my 5th grade pretty well- which makes me sad that she is already there. I don't want next year to come. I don't want her to start middle school which are definitely the YUCKY YEARS!

Vacation Day 1

On Thursday June 26, our original plan was for Matt to leave work around 3:00, come home, pack the car and we would head to St. Louis to get a good start on our drive. As life normally has a way of making its own plan, our original plan was thrown to the side. Matt's Bug had a mind of its own. The alarm would go off and wouldn't shut off. So Matt took the car to the place to be fixed. The garage would be able to fix it while we were gone. I decided that I could do all the necessary car packing and meet Matt in Evansville. I washed the car, got ice, took the Dog to the vet, CLEANED the liter box for the first time, packed the car with suitcases and cooler...got the kids in with time to spare! The kids and I headed to Evansville and went to Target for some last minute entertainment items. I finally bought the 20 questions electronic game...oh what fun this little gizmo turned out to be. Once Matt dropped his car off, we headed to starbucks (of course) and then on our way to St. Louis.

Once in St. Louis, we stopped for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. This time we received excellent service as compared to our last visit a few years back. The Hard Rock Cafe is located at Union Station around some ponds loaded with goldfish. The kids had a great time feeding the fish.

After dinner, we headed to Columbia Missouri for the night. We checked in to a Hampton Inn where the front desk clerk noted the pool was open 24 hours. Of course the kids heard that comment and wanted to swim despite the fact that they desperately needed sleep. Sleeping was the only thing we did at the Hampton and eat Breakfast....the swimming would come much later in our vacation.

Little Miss Brooklyn

As most of you whom read this blog know, my niece, Brooklynn Chanel Wilhite lost her life on July 8, 2008. Brooklynn was riding her bike as she left this earth. She was such a sweetie that we could learn a lesson from...life your life to the fullest, don't worry what anyone else is thinking, get to know everyone, and smile all the time. The pastor that performed the funeral ceremony said it best...Brooklynn lived more in 6 years than some of us do in 80.

My sister placed pictures of Brooklynn on her blog. To see my sister's site, http://train_stop.blogspot.com/

Please continue to send prayers. I know that this is going to be a daily battle for my family. Some days will be good and others...not so good. Abby said it well...nothing will ever be the same without Brooklynn. She may be gone...but never ever forgotten!

Birthday Party!

Abby is having "friend birthday parties" now instead of family parties. This year's party was the easiest ever!!! She wanted to have it at Justice- a clothing store for Girls Only. If you are familiar with Limited Too, it is the slightly cheaper version! Abby is nuts about the store and I thought what the heck. Well, the party doesn't come cheap - $25 bucks a head and you have a minimum of 5 girls including the birthday girl. Abby invited 5 of her friends - they all came - and off we headed to Justice without any boys. The theme of the party at Justice is Rockstar party. The girls got their hair and make up done, played games including a dance off and modeling game. After the games, the girls got to go shopping for their favors - lip gloss, pens, etc. After the party, we headed home for some cupcakes & ice cream. After the cake, gifts were opened. Soon after, parents started arriving...oh what a fun party for Abby!

Birthday Dinner at Nagaski

Abby had her birthday dinner with Papaw Dave at Nagaski. She was being rewarded for reading the 4th Harry Potter book which is 700+ pages long! A lot of people are anti- Harry Potter because of the wizard stuff. I'm not sure how Harry Potter is different than anything else out there. Hey I am happy Abby is reading- it's not pornography! Her reading scores and intelligence have been greatly effected by immersing herself in good ol' science FICTION Book! Anyway...I digressed!

Abby and Owen loved the Nagaski with the "crazy" chef. Abby is into salmon so she had salmon today!!

Happy 10th Birthday!

Wow! My Baby is 10 today! Hard to believe!
